WFH fuel savings ‘marginal’ as petrol demand keeps rising, says economist
Despite the government’s work-from-home initiative, petrol consumption in Malaysia continues to rise, reflecting deeper structural dependence on energy-intensive economic activities. Dr. Mohd Yusof Saari argues that fuel demand is driven largely by logistics, production, transport, supply chains, and daily mobility needs that cannot be addressed through remote work alone. He emphasizes that reducing fuel consumption requires broader measures such as industrial upgrading, logistics optimisation, energy efficiency programmes, and targeted support for vulnerable households, rather than relying solely on behavioural changes among consumers.
